During 2021 and 2022 Stellenbosch Universitiy’s iconic subterreanean Main Library underwent a major refurbishment.

The brief included upgrading the existing facilities and infrastruture in a new contemprary aesthetic whilst keeping many of the original 1970’s building features in tact.

The primary focus of the project was to provide the students with comfortable and effective spaces to work while making it easier to use and navigate the library. A range of new electronic equipment, LAN Rooms and services were installed. Security and access control in the Foyer was upgraded and a new Information and Client Services Desk, Student Work Spaces and Leisure Reading areas with new loose and built-in furniture were provided. New signage, wall accent colours, finishes and wallpaper were introduced. Gender Neutral Toilet Areas for students and staff were created, as well as provision of Universal Access throughout.
