The observatory building for the internationally prestigious new large telescope is twinned with a similar telescope in Texas, USA. SALT is the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere. The project was awarded the Best Hi-Tech Project Award and the Joint Best Project Award by the SA Institute of Steel Construction in 2003.

The tower houses the focussing mechanism for the telescope. The observation and control rooms are contained inside the building. The dome opens and rotates according to the desired direction of observation.
