Cederkloof Botanical Retreat is the story of the systematic transformation of an old and rundown 1970’s resort to an engaging, relevant and minimalist nature retreat. A completely reimagined architectural language had to be created to blend with the exceptional landscape – while being economically feasible.

A series of interventions were prioritized and developed, the “Opstal” (venue facility) being one of the first. The rundown structure was completely gutted and the wrap around verandah was enlarged and redone in a minimalist steel construction to accommodate large outdoor functions or retreats. Steel structures were designed to allow creepers to become the “green” ceiling of the roof.

Together with this the addition of an outdoor “on fire” cooking area added a new dimension to the experience and functionality. The outdoor bread oven, aptly named the ”BellaYamu” (translated “beautiful girl from the earth”) is an artisan baker’s dream – easily reaching temperatures of 350deg C and allowing weekend and event cooking of all kinds.
