Vredekloof Primary is an extra large primary school built on a gently sloping site that contained a copse of beautiful pine trees and a small group of large blue gums. The trees formed a starting point for the design because of the possibilities for shaded outdoor play.

The school further follows a simple single storey courtyard layout with gentle level changes to economically follow the slope. The enclosed outdoor spaces provide secure learning, play and socialising opportunties for the learners and teachers. The Grade R’s have a seperate entrance and play courtyard which allows better control and safety for little ones. The playful roof design for the four Grade R classrooms animate the design and create beautiful airy classroom spaces. The Hall is easily but securely accessible for public functions.

Due to the slope of the site it was possible to include substantial rainwater harvesting with water storage in a secure underground reservoir from where the rainwater is pumped for irrigation and as fire water back up.
